The MOT is not an alternative to properly servicing and maintaining a vehicle and is by no means a 12 month guarantee of the vehicle's roadworthiness. It is important to realise that the MOT test does not cover areas of a vehicle's mechanical condition that are not related to safety or emissions.

An important aspect of the MOT is that the vehicle’s equipment is tested, by and large, to the standard to be expected during its year of manufacture. For example, the brakes and emissions of a 1919 Morris will not be tested to the same criteria as a 2006 Mercedes.

Any vehicle can be MOT tested even if the vehicle is unregistered (kit cars or imported vehicles). Imported vehicles that are MOT tested in Great Britain must meet British standards even if the importation is temporarily. An example would be combined stop lamps and indicators commonly found on American vehicles which are not appropriate for use in Britain.

What the Test Looks For Generally:

Lighting. Checks will be made for the position, security of fixing, colour & brightness of the Side Lamps, Stop Lamps, Rear Reflectors, Direction Indicators, Hazard Warning Lights, Number Plate Lamps, Rear Fog Lamp(s) and Headlamps. In addition the Headlamps will be checked for matching and beam pattern.

Steering & Suspension. Checks will be carried out on elements inside the vehicle, under the bonnet and wings and under the vehicle, including: Steering Wheel & Column, Transmission Shafts, Steering Mechanism/System, Power Steering, Wheel Bearings, Front and Rear Suspension and Shock Absorbers (Dampers).

Brakes. Checks will be carried out on elements inside the vehicle, under the bonnet and under the vehicle, including: ABS Warning System/Controls, Brake System and Parking Brake System. Checks are also made for Braking Efficiency and Braking Balance.

Wheels & Tyres. Checks will be made on: the Tyre Size/Type, Tyre Condition and Roadwheels/Fixings.

Seat Belts. Checks will be made on: the Moutings, the condition and operation of the Belts Front and Rear (where applicable).

General. Checks will also be made on various other components including: the Horn. The Exhaust System and Emissions, the Structural Security and Corrosion, Mirrors, Fuel System, Registration Plates and VIN Numbers, Windscreen, Wipers, Washers, Driver's Visibility, Body Condition, Seat Security and Doors.

Please note that the M.O.T. Test Certificate relates only to the condition of the testable items at the time of the test. It is not evidence of their condition at any other time, nor of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. It is an offence to operate a vehicle on the roads without a valid M.O.T.
